Beneath the Snore: Unraveling Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is more than just loud snoring. It is a serious sleep disorder where a person’s breathing repeatedly stops and restarts during sleep. The most common type, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), occurs when the muscles in the back of the throat fail to keep the airway open, despite the effort to breathe. This obstruction often results in a choking or snorting sound, and the person might momentarily wake up.

The repercussions of untreated OSA because of poor, disturbed interrupted sleep from these repeated awakenings at night are not just limited to daytime fatigue and headaches. It can lead to complications like high blood pressure, memory issues and brain fog, Type 2 diabetes, atrial fibrillation and even
cardiac arrest and strokes. In addition, patients suffer from mental health issues like depression anxiety and hormonal issues like low Testosterone in men.

Recognizing and treating OSA is essential, not just for a good night's rest, but for maintaining overall health. It's crucial to consult with a sleep specialist if you or a loved one experiences symptoms like excessive daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, observed episodes of breathing cessation, or abrupt awakenings accompanied by gasping or choking or any of the other medical conditions mentioned above.
